CISSP Overview

One of the most recognized security certifications is the CISSP which stands for Certified Information Systems Security Professional is offered by (ISC)2 the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium.  The CISSP course is for both hands on and managerial security professionals, it’s very frequently asked for on security related job applications,  and is basically the certification you should have if you are in this field.

Prerequisites

Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years full-time work experience in at least 2 of the 8 domains. You can get reduce this by 1 year if you have either a 4 year college degree or a one of the approved credentials from (ISC)² .   If you don’t have the experience, you can still become an Associate by passing the exam.  You will then be given 6 years to gain the necessary experience.

Exam Information
  • Length of exam 6 hours
  • Number of questions 250
  • Question format Multiple choice and advanced innovative questions  
  • (Innovative questions include drag and drop and choosing the the answer on a diagram)
  • Passing grade 700 out of 1000 points
  • Testing center Pearson Vue Testing Center
  • Cost $599 US

Certification Maintenance

To maintain your CISSP certification you have to abide by the (ISC)² code of ethics and pay the annual maintenance fee of $85 US.  You also have to earn a minimum of 40 CPE credits each year which include attending online seminars and live educational events.  There is a 3 year recertification cycle anniversary, in which time you have to earn a minimum of 120 CPE credits which, if you do the math on the 40 per year, works out nicely.
